So after a long evening of drinking at the Rotunda, I suddenly realized I need some food so I can continue. Earlier we had a burger discussion so that kind of narrowed down what we were going to eat. The disappointing bit was the £20 for a burger. I really don’t see the reason to have as expensive as a burger especially without expensive or exotic ingredients. At the very least it wasn’t disappointing but there was more to ask from it.
How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7.5/10
It is among the few burgers I have had with a different style patty and it isn’t something I expect from this kind of restaurant.
The burger had:
- Beef Patty
- Smoked Applewood
- Gherkins
- Tomato
- Lettuce
- Brisket Gravy
- Brioche
The patty was very different from what you would expect from such a place. The meat was high quality and most places would have a purist approach where there would leave the meat to speak for itself. Normally you would just put salt and maybe pepper on it and that is it. This patty had plenty of spices and flavour flowing through and it was worked through the meat before being grilled. It was much closer to a Balkan/Middle Eastern Kofta than a classic burger and I actually loved that. The patty was full of flavour, it was juicy and everything came together. The burger was a bit dense so that would be my only light critique.
The cheddar was lovely and fitted the burger quite well. The depth of the cheese shined through the rest of the heavy flavours and that is what helped it stand out. It was a nice thick slice and the smokiness came through.
The gherkins were crispy and acidic, exactly what you want from them. It brought balance to the bites and was a good pallet reset. Thankfully it is summer and the tomatoes are delicious. The sweetness came right through and together with the gherkin it created that classic burger topping feel. The lettuce was only a single leaf. Either put more or don’t put any, and please don’t forget to shred it..
The brisket gravy was for sure one of the more interesting sauces I have had. At the beginning I though it was an overly reduced onion chutney. There was so much depth of flavour it was insane. I would have preferred if it was a bit more saucy and not as reduced but I was very impressed by the rich taste.
Brioche was nice in the beginning but towards the end it couldn’t hold the patty very well. I was hoping for a more stable burger base considering the size. Nonetheless it was delicious and fluffy… maybe toast it a bit more?
Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 4/10
The fries were good and the choice of beer and drinks were great, not sure if it is worth the price though
Quirkiness level of the experience? – 5/10
Nothing too quirky but I really liked the addition of Brisket Gravy, not something I have seen
