Call me crazy, but I have been having a lot more vegan burgers lately. It hasn’t been something I intentionally planned but just so happened that I’ve been going out with vegan/vegetarian friends and everyone is craving burgers. Plus vegan burgers can be very interesting. Last time I had Vurger I was quite nice. It was a very vegan take on classic recipes
How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7/10
I tend to prefer vegan burger recipes that embrace the vegan side rather than trying to mimic the flavours and taste of a classic. This was a combination of the two worlds. A good imitation with the characteristics of a nice vegan burger.
The burger had:
- Tempeh, Black Bean, Chickpea, Red Pepper Patty
- Vegan Cheese
- Gherkins
- Tomato
- Lettuce
- House Burger Sauce
- Brioche
So plant-based meat patties like Beyond Meat are good for people who miss the meat in their life. I don’t. I, however, prefer to make use of the fact that the burger is vegan and eat an interesting combination of flavours like this one. I really enjoyed it mainly because the roasted peppers and the beans created a really nice grill like depth of flavour. It was moist it behaved like a single patty, the seasoning was great and it was just a very flavourful piece of food. I would love to have that on a regular basis.
Vegan cheese is one of my biggest problems with vegan burgers and food in general. It just doesn’t cut it for me, it lacks flavour or feels very artificial. This one was the closes I have had to a shitty American cheese for a burger and it kind of works but it is still not there. You get the melted cheese idea and a bit of the taste but it is on the level of Tesco Value American cheese.
The gherkins were great, I’m pretty sure they are homemade. They have great acidity and overall flavour. They really finish the burger and give it that classic feel together with the sauce. The tomato was fresh and tasty it also rounded up the whole taste picture for the burger. As you might expect I was disappointed by the single leaf lettuce. My burger slid two times and there wasn’t anything except inconvenience brought to the table by this lettuce.
The sauce was good it had that classic burger sauce feel that you can find at many places but there is something about vegan mayo that isn’t really hitting the spot for me. It doesn’t have that base for layering flavour you would expect. Nonetheless very tasty and went well with the whole theme.
Vegan brioches are surprisingly good. They can feel much lighter than the regular ones. Fluffy yet firm and was absorbing the sauces… that is what you need.
Burger joint venue and overall experience? – -/10
I wasn’t really impressed by the fries. They felt very basic with vegan cheese… and you know how I feel about vegan cheese.
Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8/10
The Vegan burgers are interesting for sure and it isn’t every day that you find them or eat them (unless you are a vegan I guess)
