So last time I went to Vinegar Yard I was very hyped for my first food market in a while. So I didn’t indulge only in the one burger I reviewed last time. I also tried a vegan burger from one of my favourite burger joints in London – Baba G. As the burger scene has changed and almost everyone is offering a larger variety of vegan burgers it makes sense for me to try more of them and build an opinion about them.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 5/10

Considering BabaG is Indian inspired burgers I was expecting their BabaV to be amazing. Sadly that wasn’t the case, lets go over it.

The burger had:

  • Mushroom Based Patty
  • Aubergine Chutney
  • Onion Bhaji
  • Vegan Mint Riatha
  • Vegan Beetroot Bun

Now I was hoping for an interesting vegan patty, not a meat alternative patty. I respect a vegan burger not when it tries to imitate a real one but rather when it tries to take its own identity. This patty was also drenched in spices that you would typically find in Indian cuisine, but unlike their lamb patties, this wasn’t balanced. You couldn’t really make a difference between the individual spices and ingredients in the patty, it had a very generic curry feel that didn’t excite me much. It just felt like a homogenous single flavour blob. It did give the right note though and thank god the toppings saved it.

The onion bhaji was absolutely great. It gave great texture it had a nice onion depth of flavour that matched the spices and the sauces. I think it is so much better than generic onion rings you would find on some burgers. The batter is really what makes it tasty together with the right sauces. It was the centrepiece of the burger for sure.

This is the first time I have had an aubergine chutney. On its own, it was very nice and had a certain depth that was appealing, the sweetness and the aubergine when well together. However, the spices overwhelmed it and the only thing left was the sweetness from it (end of the day that is what the chutney is for). I would have loved fewer spices or more chutney. It did go great with the bhaji though. I also liked its contrast with the Mint Riatha. They both worked great with each other, although I have to say the vegan riatha isn’t as great as the regular one. The sharpness of propper good yoghurt isn’t replicated.

I liked the bun quite a bit! It was fluffy, it wasn’t soggy it had a sweet note and worked with the rest of the ingredients.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? –  10/10

Just go visit Vinegar Yard, it is great. Good beer and good food everywhere!

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 9/10

Indian vegan burgers aren’t a frequent sight and it is quirky for sure.
