Not sure what is happening culturally within the burger space but more and more burgers I’m trying recently are really going for that diner style/junky food McDonalds/Burger King experience. The gourmet burger that was very popular few years back is now taking a back seat to this much more classic feel that focuses on nostalgia and good ingredients. Lawless City Burger is an example of a pop up burger place that is focusing on the more rustic experience.
How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8/10
This is a very classic burger recipe with a light sauce twist that does hit you nostalgically yet delivers something more.
The burger had:
- Beef Patty
- Gherkins Pickle
- Jalapeno
- Crispy Dry Onions
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Cheese
- Siracha & Mayo
- Potato Bun
As usual lets start with the beef patty. It was a middle ground between a smashed and a full sized patty, so you did get a bit of the flavourful charred fat with the juicy middle. It was very well seasoned and the beefy flavour was well highlighted. The meat was of good quality and had a fatty cut for sure, I did like the feel of it.
The cheese was the bit that really pushed the junky burger feel. It was classic processed burger cheese that melts well. It was plenty, flavourful and it simply built upon the concept.
The relish is what brought the burger to the next level, the combination of the tangy gherkins and jalapenos with the kick from them really added that balance to the bite. The gherkins really reminded me of that classic McDonalds cheese burger feel and the hot that followed from the Jalapenos and the siracha sauce followed quite well. The onions were a bit lost for me though. I would have loved that crunchy texture to be more present as well as the flavour.
Lettuce wasn’t sliced and you know how I feel about it. It didn’t really showed through the burger, I would have loved some more. The tomato was of decent quality although it could have been better but it built upon well with the siracha and mayo sauce.
The bun wasn’t very impressive. It was on the dry side and too neutral it wasn’t much except a burger holder.
Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 4/10
Received complimentary fries which was great. They were tasty but a bit more on the soggy rather than crunchy side. They were well seasoned but nothing spectacular
Quirkiness level of the experience? – 5/10
A very classic recipe that accents pickles and hot flavours. Not completely standard but not unheard of.
