The last burger from the vegan series is the Buffalo Vurger from VurgerCo. I have had seitan ( not Satan) in a burger before and you can check one of my reviews that uses a similar version of it. I have to say it has a very similar texture to a chicken but it has a bit more character on its own. You can definitely figure out it isn’t a chicken, unlike the Beyond Meat burger patty.
How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8/10
Seitan is wheat gluten that is alternative to soybeans. It is shaped and cooked frequently as a chicken alternative and it is oddly close and tasty. It has a tad bid of a distinctive flavour that gives it character
The burger had:
- Seitan “chicken”
- Vegan Mozarella
- Gherkins
- Crispy Onions
- Buffalo Hot Sauce
- Baconnaise
- Brioche
The “chicken” was cut more as goujons. The coating wasn’t the crispiest, the centre had a bite to it and was chewy but in a good way. As I mentioned before I like the fact that seitan has a bit more character it feels like chicken but with a bit of flavour. I could easily see it better if it is celebrated differently. Not sure it matches the dark meat of a chicken though. I was hoping the Buffalo sauce that was coated all over to be spicier. It was tasty but I was expecting more
The mozzarella was a bit of a disappointment. It added a cheesy feel but not really much flavour. All the flavours were coming from the sauces and the salad. I haven’t tried many vegan kinds of cheeses so I’m not sure what is the right choice to recommend. Maybe more spices with the melted mozzarella would have pushed it in the right direction
The gherkins were a great pop of brightness together with the onions. They provided nice acidity and brought balance to the chicken and the sauces. The combination of flavour stood out. It is a great example of using relish to bump your burger experience. The thing that brought a lot of body on the table was the baconnaise it was surprisingly close to the real thing although it was fully vegan as everything else on the many. It brought that smokiness which combined with the Buffalo sauce and the relish brought the distinctive flavour in the burger.
The brioche was OK, it held things together nicely but it didn’t impress me with anything specific except for the fact it is done without milk and butter.
Burger joint venue and overall experience? – -/10
Didn’t have anything else except the burger but the sides seemed nice!
Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8/10
The Vegan burgers are interesting for sure and it isn’t every day that you find them or eat them (unless you are a vegan I guess)
