So not sure if you are familiar but a lot of people are doing Veganuary (not I, don’t worry). But this was a good opportunity to try Vurger Co. They have been on my radar for a while and as vegan burgers have become more popular it seemed like a good time to try it. They have opened a venue closer to where I live so all the stars had aligned.
How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7/10
So recently I have had a few more Beyond Meat burger patties so I kind of know exactly what to expect. As mentioned before the flavour coming out of Beyond Meat is comparable if not better than a lot of burger joints.
The burger had:
- Beyond Meat Patty
- Double Vegan Cheese
- Gherkins
- Tomato
- Burger Sauce
- Lettuce
- Brioche
The Beyond Meat patty was juicy and had a very classic burger patty flavour. It actually felt more on the greasy side and closer to a junky style burger. Not sure if it was the flavour combinations or the way it is cooked. I’m impressed yet there is always something missing compared to a high quality meat patty, a certain depth of flavour.
Now the vegan cheese is not usually something I’m hyped about. But this hit the classic melted cheese vibe. It built upon the junk food vibes and it tasted well.
The fun part is that in the vegan burger the weakest part were the vegetables. The gherkins had a nice nostaligia hit. Together with the patty and the cheese they created a very McDonaldsy feel, I would have loved a few more though. The tomato wasn’t great, not too much flavour and not the ripeness you would expect. The lettuce was more on the soft rather than crunchy side, I didn’t really feel the need for it.
I did like the sauce it was reminiscent of a classic burger – relish, mayo ketchup, it helped the junky theme. The bun was a bit on the soggy side but tasty.
Burger joint venue and overall experience? – -/10
Didn’t have anything else except the burger but the sides seemed nice!
Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8/10
It isn’t every day that you eat a vegan burger. It is strange that you get these classic junky burger flavours from a vegan recipe. The difference between expectations and reality is the most shocking.
