I was back in Scotland, back in Glasgow and back in Steak Cattle and Roll. This is the first time I have visited the Merchant City branch. I was hyped for a big messy burger and this is exactly what I got.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7/10

It is always weird when a burger has repeated ingredients like the onions. The burger had both pan fried onions and fresh red onions.

The burger had:

  • Beef Patty
  • Steak
  • Cheddar
  • Pan Fried Onions
  • Peppercorn Sauce
  • Red Onions
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Brioche

This was for sure a very meaty burger. Having both a steak and patty was an interesting experience. They provide two sides of the same beef coin. The burger is fatty, very little spiced made of good quality meat. If the patty was the only meat, it was going to run into the same problem as last time –  too plain flavour profile. But this time the steak nicely complimented the patty and made the beef the centerpiece of the whole recipe. The steak also felt much more like an Eastern European steak rather than a British one. It was medium-well done on grill and wasn’t too chewy or big of a cut. The peppercorn sauce also complimented the beef flavour perfectly and I feel it was almost a perfect sauce for this burger.

The cheddar this time was a bit of a miss. With the very meaty profile a lot of the cheesiness was lost in between bites. I think in the other Steak Cattle and Roll burgers the cheese had a much bigger stage compared to this one. That was fine but I was hoping for a bit more. If I was approaching a steak burger I was most probably going to omit the cheese all together.

For me the biggest let down were the onions. The caramelized ones were greate and brought the right level of sweetness to the entire experience. As you know caramelized onions go perfectly with minced beef or steak and it did. But this time they were a bit of a fight with the fresh onions. You had sweetness and the sharp acidic flavour coming from the red onions which felt a bit strange. Not sure why they had two types of onions but I think if they only had caramelized ones or if the red onion was diced white onions it was going to hit the balance right.

The rest of the vegetables also let me down. The lettuce wasn’t shred and you know my opinion on that… Don’t let the sauce drip away. The tomatoe wasn’t of great quality either. The brioche though was nicely toasted and tasty

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

This should be renamed to food coma venue. The size of the portons is huge. If you decide to go for cheesy fries, after you eat them you will feel your body slow down, yet your mind and tummy will be satisfied.

I would have preferred a larger drink selection but all and all there are sides for everyone.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 6//10

I like the idea of a pinaple in a burger. It could have been executed in a better way but this for sure is atypical.
