Mercato Metropolitano is one of the best places for food in London. The variety is huge and as you can imagine there are plenty of burger places. I was looking for a new experience as there were few familiar burger joints. Gourmet Burger’s Stand (not GBK) which is called I’Burghero is an Italian style burger joint that brings the Italian culture to the burger scene in London

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 6.5/10

From an Italian style burger I expect good meat and good cheese game. The first one was true with a light disappointment in the condiment department, the second one was a bit lacking.

The burger had:

  • Beef patty
  • Crispy Bacon
  • Egg
  • Caramelized Onions
  • Pecorino Cheese
  • Mayonnaise
  • Brioche

The burger was really tasty. The meat was good quality, not too fatty but had plenty of flavour and had a very steaky feel. I loved the fact that it was obviously handmade and had plenty of spices to keep the taste going. I was a bit disappointed to see crispy bacon on an Italian style burger. Italians have plenty of prosciutto like meats that could have been used on this burger instead of a bacon. That can provide a much more delicate and fitting flavour to go with the rest of the burger. The bacon was a bit of a miss for me as it was too crispy and dominating in some bites.

The cheese was very little and was lost in between the flavours. It was very delicate and lost in the mountain of caramelized onions. I think in the right proportion of it was going to go great with the eggs and the onions (if they were reduced) . Back to the onions, don’t get me wrong they were very good and tasty and I’m sucker for caramelized onions but these were a bit too much. There was too much sweetness in the burger because of them.

The egg was one of the centerpieces and highlights of the burger and I think it went really well. With a more balanced flavour profile this can be a killer of a recipe. I didn’t enjoy the mayo too much though it was there more for the fattiness and sauciness than the flavour really. Truffle aioli would have done wonders IMO.

The brioche was nice and fresh. I would have preferred it a bit more charred than it was but overall pretty good!

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 10/10

This is a stall at one of the best food Markets in London. You can have an Italian style burger, German beer and a French crepe! This is a great time to go with friends as there is something for everyone!

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 5/10

I don’t think I have had an Italian style burger before and you know I’m a sucker for cultural style burgers. This wasn’t something too different but lets face it, you don’t get egg on a burger frequently together with onion jam.
