Burger and beyond is a place that has been on my radar for a while now. I was looking for a place to have a night out with few friends and being close to it in Shoreditch, this was an obvious choice. Honestly, it is getting a bit more difficult to find places to eat burgers where I haven’t been, at least convenient once.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 6/10
The burger had a bit of split personality, I think it was going for a posh junk food vibe. The recipe was simplistic so I was looking for a high level of execution.

The burger had:

  • Dry Aged Beef Patty
  • Double Ammerican Cheese
  • Smoky Mayo
  • Onion
  • Seeded Brioche

As usual, let’s start with the meat. The quality is rarely in question especially in a competitive location like Shoreditch. However, for me the leaner cut didn’t go well with the junk food vibe the burger was pushing. The beef flavour was there but it was quite plain. Even if the patty was salted at least a bit more you would have gotten much more flavour from the charred crust of the burger. Please spice your burgers more. The rest of the flavours weren’t the most delicate so I don’t think the leaner cut worked well.

One of the reason the burger had a junkfood vibe was the processed cheese you would find in McDonalds. Now this is not a bad thing. I think the cheese was great. It was tasty, it was pushing for that diner style/ junkfood cheeseburger feel. It was most importantly tasty. If the quality of the other ingredients were on the right level this could have worked really well.

I have learned to apprerciate fresh onions on a burger. With the right amount you get that acidity, sweetness and signature taste which when combined with the beef, pickles and sauce it gives that classic diner style burger flavour. In this case the balance was off. There were too many onions and they were dominating the beef patty.

The mayo was a pretty nice addition, I loved the smokiness and the flavour. It was full bodied and felt like a burger sauce. The smokiness was lightly dominating the meat but overall it is one of the best mayos I have had. The bun was very soft and soaked a bit from the mayo, I would have prefered a bit more toast and overall a bit more size to the bun and patty.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

Burgers and beyond offers really good fries and the atmosphere  is of a mid range restaurant. I especially like the contrast between the environment and the types of burgers being served.

Good choice of drinks helps with having a good time.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 3/10

Nothing too quriky about the burger but I liked the atmosphere at the venue
