Back to Glasgow and I’m giving Steak, Cattle and Roll a second try. A friend of mine swears by them and I have to admit they are one of the most consistent burger joints I have been to. They do have the saucy, big and slightly quirky burgers that I love.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7.5/10

I was very interested in the chilli infused pinaple that I saw it the recipe. I beleive this is one of the best ideas I have seen recently for a burger. It is a fun way to add acidity, sweetness and hotness to a burger. Sadly it didn’t match my expectation but I appreciate the try.

The burger had:

  • Beef Patty
  • Maple Bacon
  • Chilli Infused Pinapple
  • Smoked Cheddar Cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Relish
  • Mayo
  • Brioche

Meat, meat, meat. The shortcomings of having an amazing quality meat in Scotland is the fact that plain burger is much more common than other places I have been to. As I have mentioned before I don’t mind having a simple patty that focuses on the quality of the meat but I don’t beleive it should be done when you have strong flavours surounding it. The meat was of good quality but a bit too lean. The lack of spices didn’t help underly the beef flavour and left it more as a meaty filler in the bites. Even if it isn’t too spiced, a lot of salt and pepper on the ouside with a nice crust can do wonders but you also need a fattier cut.
This is one of the few times I have liked candied bacon. I have found that a lot of places put bacon that overpowers the other flavours or is simply there because bacon is like a religion. In this case it managed to compliment the rest of the flavours including the pinapple and the smoked cheese. It wasn’t difficult to eat and was tasty as hell.

I think one of the things that Steak Cattle and Roll to best comapred to other burger joints is they balance the cheese. There is enough to pop inbetween the other strong ingredients. The smokiness from the cheddar was present and rounded up the burger in a very tasty way. The cheese was felt through every bite and sadly this isn’t a thing that a lot of other burger places do.

The grilled pinaple was tasty as hell and it did add the acidity and sweetness. I’m for sure going ot try this in one of my recipes. The chilly didn’t live up to its expectations, it was simply missing. A jalapeno chilli or scotch bonet would have worked great with the pinaple and could have added that light heat. On top of that the pinapple goes really well with the relish, never expected that. That combination of flavours really pushed the burger for me even though the patty was lacking. My biggest critique is as usual the single whole leaf of lettuce that sometimes drains the sauces and is too little to have an impact on the flavour… just get rid of it.

Nice firm and full bodied mayo was used that helped mix and mellow out all the flavours. I liked it but I was sad that all the sauces from the burger made the bun soggy on the bottom side. Either more toast or simply more bread on the bottom would have done the trick.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 9/10

This should be renamed to food coma venue. The size of the portons is huge. If you decide to go for cheesy fries, after you eat them you will feel your body slow down, yet your mind and tummy will be satisfied.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8//10

I like the idea of a pinaple in a burger. It could have been executed in a better way but this for sure is atypical.
