So few weeks before I went back home 2day burger contacted me and asked me to come and review their burgers. I do enjoy when burger places do that and it shows confidence in their abilities. I don’t tend to tell when I’m going to come so I can make sure I’m treated like a regular customer. I’m interested in how the Bulgarian burger scene is developing so adding an extra joint to my list was a priority!

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8.5/10

The burger had:

  • Beef Patty
  • Melted Blue Cheese
  • Chipotle Mayo
  • Iceberg
  • Caramelised Onion Jam
  • Crispy Bacon
  • Jalapeno

So let me begin by saying that this is the best beef patty I have tried so far in Bulgaria and one of the top ones ever. I absolutely loved it. The meat was well spiced, it wasn’t going for a purist approach which I agree with considering the quality of beef in Bulgaria for the most part. It was approached a bit more like a Kofte (the traditional Bulgarian burger we talked about ). The meat had a great and intense flavour, the spices were highlighting it and yet it was different compared to your standard beef patty. It was the centrepiece of the burger and was standing out in every bite. This is exactly what you want from it. It actually reminds me a bit of Gordon Ramsay’s patty

So everybody knows that I like blue cheese on a burger and I was pretty excited to try this one. Normally the blue cheese overwhelms a lean patty or there isn’t enough to highlight it. The reason people stay away from blue cheese is it is very easy to overwhelm it and difficult to get the right balance. Even though the patty was amazing and very flavourful the cheese was very dominating in most of the bites. It was a bit too much and was a bit too salty. A little bit less blue cheese and few touches, the burger can push for a 10/10 easily. I think the smokiness from the bacon was a nice addition to the flavour but also added to the saltiness of the burger.

I’m not sure I get the idea of the lettuce in a burger like that. You have too much intensity to be able to counteract it with freshness. Even if you do that means you need to put much more of it and mostly for the crunchy texture. But then you go to the problem of the iceberg leaf. It gathers sauce and drips it away from that tasty burger and we don’t want that. So this is why we almost always shred the lettuce but even if it was shredded I don’t see the need for it.

The jalapenos on the other side, I absolutely loved if they were a tiny bit crunchier and spicier it would have been better but still, they managed to shine with their acidity through the other flavours and bring some heat to the table. A very nice addition.

To go with the intensity of the patty, bacon and cheese we had caramelized onion, another ingredient I’m a sucker for. It is difficult to get wrong, it is tasty and goes great with a good patty and this was the case. It added quite a bit of sweetness which interacted great with the cheese and I think it was done very well. The chipotle mayo added to that fatty flavour across bites and smoothed the pallet.

The brioche was nice, firm, tasty and managed to hold most of the sauce. It was lightly toasted and great, I need to learn from where they are getting their buns!

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

Foot truck with a place to sit. Good choice of food and sides. Sadly I didn’t try the fries ( too stuffed from eating at home, next time!)

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 4//10

Burger was a very classic take with very classic ingredients nothing too special. It included ingredients I love that I haven’t seen in this specific combination but nothing weird.
