Corner Burgers was the second place I visited in Varna. It was high on the list of recommendations so I had to see what they are up to. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the burger joint. Old Buddies set pretty high expectations from the venue and the burgers were good. At least I had a baseline to judge. One of the things I rarely mention on this blog is customer service. This was one of the few times I’ve been disappointed by the staff. Lack of engagement didn’t want to answer questions or didn’t know the answer and overall an unwelcoming experience. But I’m there to judge the burger!

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7/10

The burger suffered from the “chuck good ingredients together” problem. The ingredients were tasty on their own but there were too much and overwhelming each other.

The burger had:

  • Beef
  • Cheddar
  • Caramelized Onion
  • Mushrooms
  • Tomato
  • Egg
  • Iceberg
  • Sauce
  • Brioche Bun

For my disappointment non of the Kofte culture in Bulgaria was tapped with this burger patty. I’m going to repeat myself again, but lean cuts with no spices don’t work especially when you have a large number of intense ingredients. If you want to have a more intense recipe you need to have a richer patty and this wasn’t the case. It wasn’t bad but the meat didn’t have the right profile you would expect.

The cheddar was from the processed type and there wasn’t much flavour coming out of it. In cases like that, it is more for the fattiness and I think this cheddar works well for diner-style burgers. This isn’t a diner-style burgers but it is following the path of the Bulgarian street food burgers so I kind of understand, but it should have been more.

The egg was handled great. Flavour was there, sauces and cheese helped for the full experience. It is an intense flavour especially with a leaner patty like this one. I would be interesting to try a runny egg, it will merge with the sauces and will have a lighter flavour.

The saute style mushrooms and caramelised onions absolutely amazing. These are two condiments that are difficult to mess up and always tasty together and the mushrooms were extra good. They had a lot of flavours and backed the meat in the right bites. A simpler version of the burger with emphasis on those two would be amazing.

The tomato and lettuce were also really good but they just added to the “chuck good things together” burger. I really appreciate the fact that the lettuce is shredded, it was present much more for the texture and wasn’t directing the sauce away from the burger. Talking about the sauce I was hoping for something more defining. The caramelized onions made it difficult to distinguish and only the ketchup aspect of it prevailed.

The bread was perfectly toasted and delicious

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 6/10

Not great service. Decent fries and a good selection of beers. The menu was full of interesting recipes so the decision was tough.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 6//10

The burger is apparently very standard for the Varna scene because it was very similar to the one I had in Old buddies. It had a different expression of the Gourme Street Doner Burgers that I talked about earlier .
