During one of the previous weekends, I had a lovely walk in the rejuvenated area around kings cross. Went to see the graduation exhibition of the University of London for art. I was pretty disappointed by the “art” shown and to balance the negative experience I had to have a burger. Thankfully my girlfriend had pinned on maps an interesting burger joint close to Kings Cross, Cut + Grind. I was very pleasantly surprised by the venue and what they had to offer

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8.5/10

You may have seen that recently I’ve been going on a lot of rants about the quality and the cut of the parties I have been eating.

There are a few main factors about the taste of meat. Where is it from, how fresh is it, and what cut is it. See, different cuts offer very different flavour profiles. Those flavours can be exaggerated by the spices and condiments you put in the minced meat. So the question of a good burger patty depends on what are you trying to achieve. If you are a purist, you would want only salt and pepper on the burger and nothing else, but that means the quality of the meat and cuts needs to be good enough to compensate.

The burger had:

  • Beef Patties
  • Burger Sauce
  • Toasted Brioche

The cuts that were used were what I would use for a juicy and flavorful beef patty. I was pretty hyped. The burger had only salt and was going for a very purist flavour profile which I could really appreciate. The burger was juicy and had much more flavour than 95% of the burgers I’ve had. But whenever you are going for as naked of a burger, you need your meat to be at the top 1%. One of the beef factors was lacking, but it was not the cuts. To compensate, I would have put a few spices to enhance the flavour even more. Non the less for a brave burger like this one, excellent execution and a delicious experience.

The main reasons I’m taking points away from the burger is the burger sauce. It was a classic – mayo, ketchup, mustard, pickles.  Yes, it was good, but it wasn’t a continuation of the purist approach. Whenever you are going down that road, you need to make sure everything is on the same level; otherwise, it is very obvious when something goes wrong. I would have preferred more character in the mayo and the mustard. Mayo usually gives the body and the mustard that tangy punch that takes the pickle in a different direction. This was missing, again it was not bad but not what you would be aiming for with a burger like this one.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 10/10

I absolutely loved the beer choice in the place. It wasn’t much, but it was well selected. They had a lot of wines for a burger place.
The chips were amazing. I went and grabbed an extra side just because I liked them so much. They had plenty of other options depending on your dietary requirements

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8/10

Not every day you go into a burger joint with such a “brave” burger on the menu, and it was nicely made.
