So during my second visit at Harlem Soul, I had the pleasure ( and the capacity to be honest) to try another burger. My expectations were a bit lower after the first one I tried and Lets Get Jammin’ looks like something I would cook at home. Heavy flavours and aim to strike the balance between them. This is what I expected but as I said. I’ve started pulling points when you serve me whole-leaf lettuce on a burger… It’s a no no.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7.5/10

This is my style burger and I was sure I was going to like it but the question is how much? Quite a bit, however, it is far from perfect. Recently a burger I tried at Black Bear was a good example of nice heavy flavour and no unnecessary ingredients however Lets Get Jammin although delicious falls in a few of those traps.

The burger had:

  • Beef Patties
  • Caramelized Onion
  • Chorizo Jam
  • Bue Cheese
  • House Pickle
  • Tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Toasted Brioche

Lean burgers are fine as long as the rest of the flavours are delicate. Whenever you have chorizo and blue cheese there is no way the patty can be felt. On its own it was nice. It could have used a bit more spicing but the toppings weren’t for it. The chorizo jam is something I tried earlier in a starter and I loved its heavy flavour but somehow it wasn’t as prominent as I expected which was actually great for the beef patty as it wasn’t completely masked.

The blue cheese was in a pretty good balance through most of the bites. It is difficult to balance a strong cheese as it is very dominant and taste and can mask the rest of the ingredients. If the chorizo jam was strong in taste I would have expected a bit more cheese or a smellier one.

The house pickles were on point. The acidity helped with the harmony between all the flavourful ingredients. Combine that with the additional sweetness of the classic caramelized onion and you have a very good salad… so leave it there. The tomato was unnecessary it didn’t add more sweetness or a missing flavour. The bites were already quite full. Not having a top quality tomato means you can basically ignore it, don’t push it in when you don’t need. Lettuce was a single leaf, so let’s not talk about it. In addition, I don’t think it matters as a flavour profile unless it is a lot whenever you have chorizo, blue cheese and caramelized onions.

The bun was fluffy but wasn’t soggy, delicious and made me very happy.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 10/10

This is a great burger joint. There are a lot of craft beers both on tap and cans. Refreshing drinks and amazing sides. I cannot recommend the rest of the food experience enough. The fries were great there a lot of other flavours you can enjoy but keep in mind food tends to be on the heavy side.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 6/10

This isn’t a weird burger but it isn’t every day that you eat chorizo jam (the pretty good stuff)
