Needing to review new burgers and being close to the GBK joint in South Kensington was a good combination of circumstances. In addition GBK just re-released their signature Kiwi Burger which I knew I had to try

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8.0/10

GBK always have interesting recipes to show but the execution always lacks a bit. This time was better but we can do better GBK.

The burger had:

  • Beef
  • Mature Cheddar
  • Beetroot
  • Egg
  • Grilled pineapple
  • Relish
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • House Mayo
  • Sesame Bun

The more high-quality meat I try the more I appreciate the need for proper use of spices on a beef patty. The flavour was there, it wasn’t lost but it could have been much better. Having only beef and salt for a patty without premium meat and you will always get sub-optimal experience.

The Kiwi is a very different burger from what I’ve tried so far. As you know I like balance in a burger and yet the ability to feel each ingredient. The Kiwi is all about the balance but there is flow only between few of the flavours and there is a different taste popping in your mouth every time you chew. That is because of the drastic differences between each of the ingredients. Yet there is a nice soothing balance at the end of the bite that has managed to combine all the flavours and lets them linger there.

I can’t stress how good Grilled pineapple is. It provides a sweet and lightly acidic charcoal flavour that goes great with any meat. Suddenly that gets earthed down by the beetroot and then a clear egg finishes the whole experience. The cheddar manages to compliment every ingredient and somehow it brightens in between all the aforementioned.

Everything up until now sounds great until you reach the tomato and lettuce which were sub part and I’m not sure they were needed. They were not bad perse, but they weren’t adding to that experience the rest of the burger had.

The house mayo greased up and finished the burger nicely. I loved the toasted bun, especially with the sesame seeds.

Remove the tomato and lettuce and add good quality meat or simply add spices and you have a 10/10.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

The fries at GBK are always great and you do have a nice selection of sides for any foodie so I do recommend it.

Beer of choice: Brewdog Punk IPA

IPAs in my humble opinion are the best drink for a burger since they help clear your pallet and are a great refreshments. Brewdog’s Punk is certainly a light staple that will help with that.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 10/10

This is a very weird and unique recipe I haven’t seen anywhere else. It was an interesting experience that I really appreciated.
