Going to Mooshies was certainly inspired by the idea of giving benefit of the doubt to vegan burgers. I like vegan food, but I think there is place and a time for it. Don’t try to mask it as a burger and be honest, I’m not 4 years old so you would have to trick me to eat veggies. Ok maybe I’m, but that is not the point…

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 7/10

One of the reasons I went to try out a Vegan burger was because of a foodie video. It was featuring “pulled” Jackfruit as a vegan substitute for pulled pork. Mooshies was one of the burger places that was offering this interesting experience and I had to try it at least once. It is safe to say that I was not “fooled” by the jackfruit… good try vegans but not today. Non the less this was a pretty nice take

Size: Large

The burger had:

  • Brioche
  • Coleslaw
  • Pulled Jackfruit with BBQ sauce

So, to clarify I think this was more of a burger than a sandwich since it was missing the typical “burger like” patty similar to the other burger I tried. But for the sake of the round bread and the burger place lets call it a burger. The jackfruit was dripping with BBQ sauce, so you instantly get that association with pulled pork. The texture was almost there although slightly “mushier” (get it?) than pork. Where every meat eater would be lost by this imitation is the taste and fattiness of pork. There are some flavours which are very specific and pulled pork is one of those. It had a lot of spices and it certainly was going for its own thing but when my eyes were seeing pork but not tasting it… I din’t like it

Compared to the other burger it was certainly more in the right direction. The flavours were well balanced. The sweetness of the pulled jackfruit balanced with the acidity and bitterness of the cabbage in the slaw. I would have actually loved a bit more zestiness, it would of brought up the cabbage even more and collided well with the sweetness of the fruit. The slaw was certainly different due to the lack of mayo and it simply felt kind of plain. Sorry lack of real mayo.

The brioche was an appropriate choice since it was complimenting nicely the already sweet core of the burger. The seeds on the bun were ok but I think they were simply there for the edgy experience rather than being part of the recipe.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 4/10

The burger joint has nice selection of Pale Ales but the fries weren’t mesmerising they tasted kind of  green/uncooked. Seating also not very suitable for large people like myself keep in mind

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 10/10

I can’t say I wasn’t intrigued until my last bite about how will the burger joint surprise me. This is a unique experience and there was another burger that was certainly much better. Not every day you eat a fully vegan burger that tries to be the regular thing and gets close.
