I was asked to review a Vegan burger. And looking for a good joint I ended up at Mooshies. A burger joint that specialises in “not a burger” burgers. I know some people don’t think vegan burgers are actually burgers since they lack the classic core of a burger and I would agree but from a culinary point of view I was interested in what vegan cooks have come up with.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 5/10

Being vegan means limiting the pallet of flavours available to you. That is why if I end up having an amazing vegan dish I praise it a lot because it has found a difficult way to make something unique and tasty. Sadly I can’t say that about “What’s UR Beef?”

Size: Large

The burger had:

  • Black beans and quinoa patty
  • Lettuce
  • Gherkins
  • Vegan cheese
  • Caramelised Onions
  • Mustard
  • Gluten Free Vegan Bun

My beef is none and that is the biggest problem. What is your beef takes a very classic burger recipe but instead of a nice beef burger you are welcomed by a quinoa and black bean patty. It is delicious but the two ingredients are not strong enough to form a centrepiece of a burger.

As a cheese lover the only thing I would say is… No. Sorry vegans but you are missing something great and you can’t convince me otherwise.

So going back to the regular veggies of the burger I have to admit they are different. You don’t have the meat taste so suddenly you can feel the lettuce and gherkins actively shining across each bite.

The caramelised onions tend to be a perfect addition to a burger if you ask me but they lacked something to latch on. You don’t have the meat to accentuate the onions or a good cheese to push the acidity and sweetness so suddenly you feel much more that general jam taste because there isn’t anything to compliment it properly.

One of the biggest problems with the burger was the enormous amount of mustard which has no other strong flavours to clash with and hence dominates every single bite. I like bread, salad and mustard but with less we can certainly balance the taste more

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 4/10

The burger joint has nice selection of Pale Ales but the fries weren’t mesmerising they tasted kind of  green/uncooked. Seating also not very suitable for large people like myself keep in mind

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 10/10

I can’t say I wasn’t intrigued until my last bite about how will the burger joint surprise me. This is a unique experience and there was another burger that was certainly much better. Not every day you eat a fully vegan burger that tries to be the regular thing and gets close.
