So I was on a trip to New York so I had to try some burgers in the land that invented them… thank you ‘Murica! Sadly due to events I had to attend and lack of time I couldn’t visit a lot of burger joints. Ted’s is a restaurant that was a recommendation from a colleague as “The best bison burger” in New York so I had to go and give it a try.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 9.5/10

Having the opportunity to try Bison  was something I couldn’t miss and seeing the recipe in the menu I was really excited. This is one of the best burgers I’ve tried hands down so here it is

Size: Large (American Large)

The burger had:

  • Bison Patty
  • Gruyère
  • Blue Cheese
  • Bacon-caramelized Onions
  • Roasted Garlic Aioli
  • Baby Argula
  • Brioche Bread

This is the first time I’ve tried bison and I was very happy with the flavour. I don’t think it is a surprise that it was very close to beef however slightly more gamy which I think suits a burger much more. Even though there weren’t many spices the meat had a strong accent and was not in any way covered by the rest of the strong ingredients. The meat was good quality wasn’t frozen and very juicy.

I said it before and I will say it again. Caramelized onions are the best thing to put on a burger. Combined with the bacon it was a great taste explosion. Overall the burger had more of a sweet flavour to it and the bacon just went so well with it. You could feel it along side the other ingredients and complimented the bison.

The cheese combination was interesting. Blue cheese is one of my favorite add-ons for a burger and even though very powerful in taste it was nicely balanced by the tangy flavour of the gruyer. This is the kind of burger I like – multiple tastes fighting for dominance in on your taste buds. My only critique is that sometimes the cheese was overwhelming some of the other ingredients mostly the bison.

I thing argula is the best greens you can put on a burger just because of their specific taste. When they have the right amount of oil it really opens this wierd “meaty” flavour which goes well with the rest of a burger, yet you still have that healthy greens.

The toasted brioche was great and added to that sweetness. It just complimented the burger very well.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

It is a big old style restaurant, not the typical modern burger joint. They had a big bar and a nice selections of IPAs. I went for the Laguinitas ( I heavily recommend it) .

The fries were great they helped clear your pallet in between burger bites. They were greasy, salty and tasty. All and all it is a place that is going to impact your cholesterol level but lets face it, this is what you want from a burger joint.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 6//10

You don’t try bison every day and it isn’t as popular in New York (apparently ) compared to other places in the US. I loved the recipe but nothing too quirky with it.
