So I was back in Scotland and the challenge was how many burgers can I eat for two days and not get my arteries clogged. Years go I had one of my best burger experiences in a burger joint in Dundee, The Boozy Cow. You are served in a huge tray with kitchen rolls on the side and a lot of sauces. The objective is to get yourself dirty and happy and have a beer while you are doing it. Guess what I did when I found out there is a Boozy Cow in Edinburgh?

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 9/10

This is a very different burger from what you would have normally mainly because of the patty. The overall execution was really good!

The size: Large

The burger had:

  •  Venison Patty
  • Smokey Bacon
  • Pickled Red Cabbage
  • Blue Cheese
  • Crispy Onions
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato

Deer God! How often do you have venison? Not often enough I think. I love the taste. It is a well done, juicy patty that has a heavy, slightly gamy meat punch. It is a flavour of meat you certainly don’t have every day. I’ve had better venison in my life but since the meat is so good an rare to get your hand on it you need to appreciate it every time. The bacon was good and tasty but and it went OK with the patty but it was the only ingredient I would challenge in the recipe. Next time I might try it without any.

To balance strong tastes, you need other strong tastes and the blue cheese is exactly that. I would say that it is even slightly underused but overall the combination of moldy, stinky cheese and gamy meat is amazing. I realize it is not for everyone but you have the right to be wrong. To continue with the punches for your taste buds lets talk about the relish. That pickled red cabbage is the perfect salad for the venison meat. It even goes well with the cheese strangely enough. Combine that with the sweet and acidic onions and you get a really nice salad base for a burger like this.

My only critique would be the lettuce and tomato I think the tomato could have been omitted. I know I’m picky about the veggies used but they can really ruin a bite if the taste is not what you expect. In this case I think sticking with the lettuce only might be a good choice unless you try it with a good quality
tomato.

My last critique is the lack of sauces and juiciness in the overall burger. Even good quality mayo as part of the recipe would have been great. Non the less this is an amazing burger that is a must try.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 8/10

Boozy cow is one of the smaller burger chains in Scotland but they do offer a variety of beers and very very interesting set of milkshakes and cocktails. Also the fires are pretty decent and having them on a pile in a tray helps with the messy burger experience.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8//10

It isn’t every day that you have venison and it isn’t every day that is in such a good recipe. This is a place where you can certainly find different burgers and different experiences when you come so I recommend it.
