Smugglers was the last burger joint I visited in Sofia, Bulgaria. I had one of the tastiest burgers in the region and I really recommend the location.

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8/10

This was the second unique and weird recipe I tried in Bulgaria. I was really interested in the combination the moment I saw it in the menu and it didn’t disappoint. The Central American twist was an interesting experience and a very tasty one with that.

The burger had:

  • Beef Patty with Red Pepper
  • Cheddar
  • Tomato
  • Pepper Chutney
  • Avocado
  • Jalapeno
  • Mayo
  • White Bun

Smuggler’s Mexican burger had one of the tastiest beef patties in Bulgaria. It was right on spot. Juicy, well flavored, nicely spiced and good quality meat. What else do you mean? Apparently peppers, I’m a sucker for them so I really appreciated it. They asked me how I want my burger and I said medium, which every burger place should do… but I believe this burger should be served well done.

The centerpiece of this burger was the… Guacamole. Lets face it this has almost all the ingredients of a guacamole. I’m surprised they didn’t have the red onions. The guacamole accent was interesting and it was getting it’s acidity from the jalapenos which were one of the best balanced in terms of flavor and punch chilies I’ve tried in a while.
The pepper chutney managed to add the right taste notes on most of the bites but sometimes combined with the pepper in the patty it was a bit too much.

The cheese is a really famous addition to your guacamole and meat in the Mexican food. Although this was a mild cheddar you could actually feel its specific taste but I would say… maybe a bit more?

And yes, let’s not forget the bun. One of the best breads I’ve had for a burger. It had that typical fresh white bread taste with a very crunchy exterior. The mayo was a nice soak and complimented all the ingredients. I loved it!

I loved that Mexican touch to the burger recipe. It was a tasty experience but certainly a quirky one. It’s not your typical burger. Not every day you have guacamole on your burger.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 6/10

It has a typical diner atmosphere and this is atypical for Bulgaria so props for the classic style.

The fries were good they had herbs and parmesan cheese so they were really tasty but it was more the combination of the addons then the fries themselves that made the side delicious.

Sadly the selection of beers and ales is not numerous and I didn’t get one because  I couldn’t find one that would fit the taste. However, they do have good milkshakes which is a classic drink with your burger. I recommend them.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 8//10

It is not every day that you have a recipe like  that for a burger. Is it quirky yes, is it tasty yes. I would go back to try the other burgers!
