During my last trip in Sofia I was dedicated to find more burger joints to try. Accidentally visiting Puzzl co-working spaces I encountered a food truck serving burgers. I love food trucks, I love burgers, I was hungry so it was perfect match. Burgers on the Road was a very different burger joint especially for Sofia and the experience didn’t disappoint. Although my cover was blown by a friend of mine I believe they are a really good burger joint.

Although it is a food truck and it can move, that is the last place I found them so here is the location:

How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8/10

The burger is called Muffin and it does have that sweet twist to it which I love. A nice play of name and taste. I really liked the burger and most of all the recipe although I believe the execution can be better.

Size: Medium

The burger had:

  • Horse patty
  • Peanut Butter
  • Smoked bacon
  • Mild Cheddar
  • Blueberry Jam
  • Jalapenos
  • White bread Bun

As usual lets start with the meat. I love horse meat, it is lean and very tasty I recommend if you haven’t tried it. This is the first time I’ve had horse burger and it was very well executed. Normally I have problem with the meat in Bulgaria, it is good quality but not very well spiced and grilled, this wasn’t the case. It had its distinct punch and taste and you can always feel the horse meat through every bite. Very good job. The bacon was tasty, originally in the recipe it said it was crispy however this one wasn’t. It was a good chunk and tasted great but it was quite thick so made some of the bites more difficult and wasn’t easy to balance your bites so to say. I think a crunchy bacon would of added a bit more texture to the burger.  All and all the meat was great.

The peanut butter and the blueberry jam was an amazing combination it had that slightly sweet punch but the specific taste of the peanut butter really made the burger. It balanced out perfectly with the meat and if the other two ingredients were perfect I think the burger would of gone for the 10.

The cons of the burger was the cheddar you couldn’t feel it too much across the intense ingredients. Maybe thicker slice of mature cheddar or a light blue cheese would of gone perfectly with the peanut butter, jam and the meat. I rarely get good cheese balance in burgers and I find more and more that it is a difficult balance to struck.

The jalapenos were the perfect relishy finish for the burger however these ones didn’t have a lot of host spicy taste hence the punch was missing. The sourness was good but with maybe a better quality jalapenos your taste buds would explode from all the flavors.

I loved it and I’m excited to come back and try another one.

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 7/10

The burger choice was decent, but you can’t find the recipes everywhere which makes the place very special. It is a food truck so during winter seating is not the best but these are the pros and cons of a burger truck. During summer it should be amazing.

The fires they were serving were actually homemade chips (crisps for the UK people) and were really delicious. Quite greasy so keep in mind if it isn’t your thing.

They had a very good choice of beer including some pale ales which I think are the perfect choice for any burger.

Recommended ale: Sierra Nevada

Although Sierra Nevada is a bit more on the sweet, caramel taste and it goes well with the burger, to cleanse your pallet I would go with a more hoppy option if available.

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 10//10

As I’ve mentioned before I love quirky burgers and the Muffin was exactly that. I’ve had a peanut butter burger only once before and I adored the combination. Horse meat is not something you encounter every day and it was a great addition. It is their own recipe, haven’t seen one like that, so it is certainly a unique experience. I heavily recommend it.
