How tasty is the Motherf*#$&r? – 8/10

I’m back to in my honest opinion one of the best burger joints in London. The African Volcano on Maltby Street Market

The burger had

  • Pork patty
  • Pork belly
  • Pork belly cracklings
  • Emmenthaler cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Tomatoes
  • Sauerkraut

First I need to point out. The burger is served open, and then you close it and even a large lad like myself who is almost 2m struggles to take a full bite but once you get it (a very messy bite), it is worth it.

There are several sauces used for this burger as for all the others which I think is the secret to their great flavour.

Meat quality is great, simple as that.

Something I would change for the burger is maybe the cheese and few of the veggies. The pork taste is great but overwhelms most of the other ingredients. Sauerkraut fits perfectly and so does the pickle but the cheese, greens and tomato are a bit lost among the strong pork flavour from the cracklings and the belly. I need to explore what would be a great cheese to go with pork that will compliment it well. Will get back to you on that one.

All and all a great burger

Burger joint venue and overall experience? – 5/10

The African Volcano stand is a very gritty looking place. Nothing fancy it is actually the exact opposite. You have a great friendly staff, the chef that created the recipe is making the burger for you. You see how it is prepared and all the ingredients are in front of you. The burgers a very juicy and full of sauce hence that is why you get a wet napkin so you can clean yourself. You also get a towel you can hang around your neck exactly for that messy experience (loved it)

You have drinks around the venue but a small choice at the stand itself and you don’t get any extras like fries or other sides. You pay for a tasty burger you get a tasty burger that is it.

Still more burgers to try so I’m coming back!

Quirkiness level of the experience? – 7/10

I’ve already discussed in my previous post how much I love the market and the whole atmosphere.

I think the burger here gets another point, I’ve never had such a  “porkish” experience. The layering of textures – cracklings, pork belly, pork patty creates this pleasant set of textures in your mouth.
